The Hotchkiss School employs three full-time athletic trainers under the direction of the School's physician. The athletic trainers are skilled in directly managing injuries and illness related to physical activity. The athletic trainers are certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association, the governing body for athletic trainers and are licensed to practice in the state of Connecticut.

Athletic trainers at Hotchkiss are healthcare professionals who collaborate with the medical staff of the Wieler Health Center to optimize the activity and participation of student athletes. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities. To become certified, athletic trainers must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training program at a college or university. The curriculum includes instruction and clinical experiences in the areas of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic methods, and nutrition.

Facilities

The athletic training room is a spacious, modern facility adjacent to the strength and conditioning room in the MAC. It includes treatment tables, a hydrotherapy area, and a space for rehabilitation exercises. The athletic training room also includes equipment to help student-athletes in rehabilitation and physical therapy.
